The Gloup

As promised, more about The Gloup, Deerness...

The Gloup is basically a big hole in the cliffs. It's a collapsed sea cave, with a land-bridge across it at the cliff edge, and is navigable by small boat. I've never done that, but it must be amazing!

It's "best" seen in an Easterly swell, because the sea rushes in and sprays up the cliffs... but wear a cagoul if you're going to go then!

Looking from the cliff side back inland...

Looking out towards the cliff edge and the sea (in fact, you can JUST see a light dot in the centre of the photo... this is the light coming in the entrance to The Gloup)...

Looking down into The Gloup...

Gloup Wildlife

First photo by me, geese in a field next to the car park at The Gloup, Deerness (more on the Gloup later or tomorrow)... Typical for me, only one of the geese has got his head out!

And a photo my brother took of a chick in a nest in the Gloup... we weren't sure what kind of bird (s)he was, and thought it was a bit late in the year to be still sitting there, but we're no experts...
Hey, if Blackbike from Orkney Forums comes along here for a look, he'll be able to tell us!
