Italian Chapel 2

Last few for the moment from the Italian Chapel, starting with the mural behind the altar:

Candles burning at the altar:

Statue of George & The Dragon, with the moon rising behind:

Why St George? It was a symbol of the prisoners' triumph over separation and loneliness.

Sistine Chapel...

Okay, so really it's the Italian Chapel,on Lamb Holm in Orkney, but it's still beautiful artwork.

I promised you some more photos, and there are one or two more to come yet. These focus on the mural painted above the altar.

On the right side as you face the altar...

Above you...

And to the left...

There has been some restoration carried out since the war time (in the 60's, the late Domenico Chiocchetti, who was responsible for most of the internal decoration, and who had stayed behind when the prisoners were released to complete his vision, came over to help with the restoration), but nothing has really been changed since the 1940's.

It's a very beautiful and peaceful place, and well worth a visit.

Welcome To The New Photos Blog!

If you've been here before, you would probably have seen the really, really shit doodles that I had here... that should never have seen the light of day.

I took a look at them today and decided something.... I can't draw to save my life. It's okay... I'm not upset by this... I'm secure in my inability to do anything artistic with a pencil and a bit of paper. I'm not one of these people who has an over-inflated idea of their artistic talents...

So, I've deleted all the doodles, given the blog a re-vamp (the black is gone, as is any reference to doodles) and I've changed the addy for it so it no longer mentions doodles either. And my intention for it from here on in is for my photos (which I don't profess to being any good at either, but at least I'm a bit better with a digital camera than I am with a pencil!).

Hope to see you dropping by occasionally, and if you like what you see (or even if you don't, but if you don't... be kind, please?) why not drop me a comment?
